History

St. Paul Lutheran Church was founded in 1848. In 1852 the church called its first pastor and dedicated the first church, a log cabin located on the site of the present church. In 1857 the congregation joined the Missouri Synod. The present building was constructed in 1887. In 1921 the worship services were conducted in English instead of German. The present Fellowship Hall was dedicated in 1978.

St. Paul has been greatly blessed by God and we are growing in many ways. We are building a new church!

(Please see our Building Project page for renderings of the new facility.)

The new facility will include a sanctuary, fellowship room, kitchen, nursery/cry room, choir room, and eight classrooms. The sanctuary will accommodate 300 people in the main seating area. The Building Committee, with the help of Entheos Architects of Indianapolis, designed the new facility to maintain the intimate and traditional feel of our present church. Thus, the sanctuary will include exposed wooden trusses and eight stained glass windows with scenes beginning with the birth of Christ and continuing through the New Testament era to the final window that will depict eternal glory. Stained glass windows will also surround the chancel cross. The Gethsemane window in the present sanctuary will be moved above the main entrance to the new church. In addition, the Dobson pipe organ installed in 1991 will be moved to the new sanctuary.

The fellowship room will serve as a place for our Sunday morning fellowship and Bible class as well as for special meals and gatherings.

Both the present church and fellowship hall will continue to be utilized after construction. The fellowship hall will house the church and preschool offices. The extra space in the building will allow our growing preschool more room to expand. The church will be primarily utilized as a Hispanic Ministry Center. Juan Luna, a member of our congregation, has been preparing for the pastoral ministry. He will begin his vicarage in September 2008 in a joint venture between our congregation and La Paz de Cristo Lutheran Mission, an established Hispanic mission congregation in Seymour. The present church will serve as a chapel for weekly Hispanic service, house Juan Luna’s office and also include a fellowship area and classroom for the classes and programs of our Hispanic ministry.
